I only knew that I didn’t want an “only child”. After years we wondered if we were going to have ANY children, but we left it in God’s hands. 2 months after we celebrated our 17th anniversary we had a daughter. I was so happy that I felt, I don’t want just one child, but if I have to have just one, I’m so grateful and happy for the one I got. Just 2 years later we had our second daughter. (Even though my husband is the last of his line, he never felt that strongly about having a son; he just wanted children.)
Reminds me of one of my old Superman comics, where he needs to go to the Western Seaboard and thinks to himself there was something he always wanted to do. At the Kent home in Smallville, there is a WHOOSH, then suddenly Mrs. Kent is holding a bouquet of roses.
Mrs. Kent: “That red and blue blur, that was Clark! He must have been passing through Kansas on his way to the West Coast.”
Mr. Kent: “Makes us think of how we could not have any kids of our own, then we were blessed by God with this. We are one of a kind lucky!”
Mrs. Kent: “Oh Jonathan, no need for a speech!”
Mr. Kent: “No Martha, that is no empty boast. We have the best boy in America…where lots of other folks have the opposite.”
Scene changes to a crime lord’s penthouse
Crime boss: “That lousy rotten son of mine has made a laughingstock of the Edge family name! I hope he rots in jail for the rest of his worthless life!”

Well, Elly, I’m glad you feel that way, since plenty of parents don’t feel like they got what they wanted.

Photo albums usually capture the good times…for good reasons.

Mr. Howtheduck likes to say that because he’s the father, he got to pick the gender of our children.

Tell that to my late mother. She tried for a daughter four times and only got boys. At least she got a granddaughter.

Michael came first because of the magic. That would also be a great FBOFW book title…Magic Mike!
