Only to the new mothers do newborns look so wonderful, beautiful, perfect, etc. I thought my older son was absolutely perfect, good looking, the best looking baby ever. Years later, I look at his picture and I went, ‘Eh. I don’t remember him looking like this?" He was sort of funny looking, with red skin, frowny face, dry skin, etc. I realized it was just my new mother’s eyes that saw differently. My younger was a better looking newborn, and he looked cute and he DID remain cute his entire infancy – I also looked at his picture after I looked at my older’s and saw that he was indeed cuter and even years later, I still saw the same. My grandson – he looked pretty much the same as my older son did and I saw exactly that when he was 2 hours old. Grandma’s eyes saw the truth but I fell in love with his just the same.
When my youngest brother was born I heard my dad describe him as looking like a duck. In my mind I thought that was cool and I looked forward to seeing my Donald Duck brother. I was disappointed to find he looked like a regular baby!
You were too cute for words, Elizabeth…but Michael, being a writer at heart, found just the right ones.
Speaking of brush cuts, all of my kids (3) had that brush cut top too. As soon as their hair dried after washing it would spring up. The hair grew that way and at about 8 months, or so, it was long enough that it stayed down. They look so cute on their baby pictures….
A friend of mine was born very premature, weighing only 3 lb.! Her mother told her she looked like a monkey! Not meaning an insult, just factual. Amazingly, she survived, and looks about 15 years younger than her age nowadays!

Not nice, Mike – but at least she wasn’t totally bald!
