While a Snoopy “Bleah” would be a very appropriate homage from Lynn Johnston to her favorite, Charles Schulz; the comic strip originally published back in 1989 would not be. The original final panel featured young Michael kicking the bassinet with a “KICK!” and the bassinet rocking in reaction to the kick.
What we have today is an alteration that was made using Lynn Johnston’s original artwork as Michael’s kicking leg has been Photoshopped into a vertical position and the bassinet has been moved to a vertical position with the motion lines removed. “BLEAH” is not from Lynn Johnston because Lynn Johnston puts punctuation after everything (see all the other dialogue balloons). Whoever is editing the reprints apparently did not like the idea that Michael would kick his newborn sister’s bassinet.
I was an older brother and can verify having seriously nongood feelings toward my new baby sister when she showed up in our home. I was 8 at the time. Yesterday was her 62nd BD, and we’ve pretty much learned to put up with each other……… ;-)
I’ve never seen a bassinet without legs to raise it to a working-on-the-baby level, and to get the baby out of floor drafts, pet prowlers (if you have some), and floor dust ups.
In Michael’s defense, I don’t like how most light-skinned newborns look either, and I had two of them. They tend to be bald, red, and wrinkly. Other ethnicities often have babies with hair and a complexion that hides the redness and jaundice better.
For what it is worth: I remember this style of a portable bassinette, and my kids were put into a similar one until we started using the crib. I used it for about 3 months for each child. Nowadays, what with all the safety features required, this bassinette would never pass…

I wouldn’t know, but I’m guessing it’s hard to go from only child to older sibling.

Why is everybody staring into a trash basket while talking about the baby? Is that a Canadian custom to look at refuse whilst talking about children?

Looks like they are looking into a laundry basket. Is that what Canadians use for infants? LOL

I like the technique of bookending the memories with black and yellow panels. We still get to see color in the old scenes.
