Now wait a darn minute! Granted that wasn’t the best thing to say out loud on any date, but even so – Patty explicitly told him when she first called, that she was only asking him out as her last choice, and yet Chuck is the one being insensitive, because he’s openly crushing on someone else? (A crush which has never been a secret, by the way, so she has no excuse except obliviousness not to have noticed by now!)
I think Charlie Brown has been a pretty good sport through this entire episode. He was physically with PP, as a friend and caring enough to respond to her every whim. But when she triggered his true emotional presence… Have you never been with someone and wished it was someone else?
I probably relate to Charlie Brown in today’s strip more than I really want to admit…..hence the use of the word probably. When it comes to women I’ve always been clueless.
We don’t know that he was her last option. She may have simply said that because she didn’t want to admit she wanted to go to the carnival with him and that she was asking him as her first and only option. Anyway, that put CB under no obligation to be anything less than truthful. He heard her say he was her last option, he was a nice guy about going to the carnival with her, and he told her the truth at the end, then realized too late he had hurt her feelings.
Poor Charlie Brown. He blames himself for being honest and hurting Peppermint Patty. Yes, she is mortified, but he’s honestly given her no reason to believe he likes her, she invented it all herself. These things happen. There’s fault on both sides, but by far mostly on PP’s.
Charlie Brown said, “I used to think” (past tense). It’s unclear if Peppermint Patty stayed long enough to hear the complete thought, although it appears Charlie Brown’s reply was cut short. So, IMHO, she might have done better to stick around and L-I-S-T-E-N for a change.

big time, you blockhead… you broke Peppermint Patty’s heart after you said “that little red-headed girl”

…I’ve been pretty much on Chuck’s side this whole story arc, but yeah, you blew it, Chuck!

Maybe Patty will “get it” now, that Chuck’s just not that into her! No, probably not…

Clueless. Utterly clueless. I can relate, though. I’m still being there, doing that, getting the scars.

Never talk about a past girl to the girl you are with.

At last, CB made a right decision by accident. He has cast out the Patty melt.

CB has nothing to feel bad about …he was her last option and she’s has always been insulting when speaking to him. She is completely obtuse!

On my monitor, PP is red haired. She has freckles, too.

CB, you should hook up with PP. You might end up in a threesome with Marcy.
