Those reeds would work like snorkels, not scuba gear. They would need to stay near the surface to breathe. Swimming in through the cave will involve holding their breaths, then perhaps the reeds will be useful inside the pirates’ lair.
In panel 1, it looks like the warrior in the water is expressing some doubt as to the soundness of this plan and Tarzan is “urging” him on by hitting him with the reed.
Also, has far as being “warriors”, none of them are armed. The guys getting into the barrels didn’t look to be carrying weapons either. It will be interesting to see how they are going to launch an attack on the gun and sword bearing pirates.
A giant squid! Cool! You can’t just draw a thing like that then not use it in the story. It’s like what Chekov* said about showing a gun. (*Not the one from “Star Trek.”)
