Doctor told me when I was 33 that I needed knee replacement surgery. At the time, I could not do it. I had an infant and two other children. I managed to keep going and now at age 76, my knees are not good, but painless for the most part. I exercise, but do not run or do anything else that would be bad for those knees. Most people do not know that I have “bad” knees.
My wife ran track back before Nike came out with running shoes. So her knees are shot. She has had one knee done last year, and it is much better. She wants to hold off another year on the other knee, but given the way it is slipping when we walk in the pool at the gym I’m not sure.
When I was 23, I lived on a USAF base in a foreign country and worked as a civilian contractor. The medic there at the time was a jogger, and the most emphatic advice he ever gave me about jogging was “DON’T” – it would destroy my knees, and walking was just as good for exercise. Since I’ve always been a walker, I took his advice, and had no trouble with my knees (he was in his thirties and wrapped his all the time) – until I was in a car accident which messed up my knees.
You can’t win. I still walk everywhere I can, though.
