Torture was historically used for “confessions” (we KNOW you did it) and conversions. People will say what the torturer wants o hear to get the pain to stop. Torture is not valuable for reliable information.
Contemporary use of “torture” has little to do with the acquisition of information and a lot to do with ‘punishment’ for the holding of “wrong-headed” ideas.
The “torture” as part of the culture at Abu Ghraib had very little to do with the need for information and a lot to do with hating the people over which we had control.
