However, he had almost no experience and little respect for the nuances of maneuvering a vessel the size of the Titanic (he was used to ships that were 1/2 the size and much more maneuverable). A few months prior to the Titanic’s maiden voyage, he crashed the sister ship — the HMS Olympic — in port because he didn’t understand the physics of inertia when operating a ship that size.
