    Captain Smith was an experienced British Naval Officer and had served as Captain at White Star Lines for several years. However, he had almost no experience and little respect for the nuances of maneuvering a vessel the size of the Titanic (he was used to ships that were 1/2 the size and much more maneuverable). A few months prior to the Titanic’s maiden voyage, he crashed the sister ship — the HMS Olympic — in port because he didn’t understand the physics of inertia when operating a ship that size.
