I remember when we lived in Texas (deep in the heart of), we could wash clothes and hang them out on rainy days and they would STILL dry because the air was SOOOO dry! It was amazing (to a 7 yr old).
There is nothing like hanging up wet sheets on the line in 20 F but sunny weather. First they freeze stiff as a board. Then they dry out and get soft. The technical term is sublimation.

makes me wonder how did one dry their laundry on a rainy day before the advent of either the wringer or the electric dryer

Nothing like a stiff wind at your back when you’re riding your bicycle to the store, either.

And no need for scented soaps or anti static sheets.

I once saw an advertisement for a Solar Clothes Dryer. It was a clothes line with posts. Thought it was funny, but I already had one.

Mid-Atlantic summers are not the time and/or place for hanging out laundry. Thanks to the humidity, things get moldy before they dry.

I’d put one up in my yard but the covenants won’t allow it. Makes the neighborhood look low class supposedly and an eye sore.

I couldn’t hang clothes where I am. Too many birds in the area. I would have to wash them all over again.
