heh- I work in a grocery store, but I’ve never seen this one- just people losing their minds when some dope wanders to the express lane with enough food to feed a football team.

But yes, the “big tills” are often faster than “Express”. Remember that the most time-consuming part of an order is generally the part where they pay, because SURPRISE SURPRISE, the lady who waited for ten minutes has ONLY NOW decided to crack open her purse and locate her wallet, then find the card she wants to use. And Express Lanes, of course, tend to have multiple purchases ahead of you- a good cashier can wipe out a $300 order much more quickly than her counterpart who has to ring through four $30 orders.

I’ve stood on line in both lanes with fruitcakes, still asking me to let them in front with 3 to 4 items. I use a rolling walker with the small store basket placed on the seat area;so my purchase capacity is limited….so what’s that all about?!

Most times there is a reason for the short lines. 1.there is a chatty cashier.2. Price check on the item furtherest in the back.3. Wrong item, they wanted the whole milk ,not the 1% .So then those behind just go to another cashier.

I also find that people who are buying produce make for a slower line. The whole cashier having to look up the code thing. I also tend to avoid lines with much older people (I’m almost 60 so I can say this I think) because they tend to be slow to put their items on the belt and a lot of them take the time to count out the exact change. On the other hand I like lanes with a bagger. When neither the cashier nor the customer has to bag their groceries, the line moves faster.

I use the self-checkout because I get my groceries packed the way I like them packed. One bag for refrigerated/frozen, the others for the rest of the goods. So much easier to unload one bag by the fridge ang get that job done. I use my own bags, too.

Betty if she was considerate.. would use the express and leave the regular till for those who need it. But.. it seems folk are becoming more and more selfish

How about when a new checker says, “I can help someone over here”, instead of the next person in line. Drives me nuts. Or where they answer the phone and help that person while you wait, money in hand.
