When I first came to S. Europe in about 1979, in some schools it was normal for children being punished to kneel on the floor with their arms outstretched. Later I was told that in the old days, Teacher would put a book in each hand and make them stay like that as long as they could without dropping a book.

Susan and Sally came to school unarmed and were forced to duck and cover wearing targets while the other children got to have recess at the firing range.
