My mother in law is visiting us for three months. And I get along with her very well. Of course she does not speak English – maybe that helps. Seriously I wish we could communicate better. When she goes back to Korea on July 15 my step daughter (who just graduated from High School) will go back with her for a month. She (my daughter) speaks reasonable Korean.

Most people I know are on good terms with their in-laws. I firmly believe that the stereotype of hatred with in-laws was invented by comedians and only exists in a small percentage of marriages.

That having been said, it’s not surprising that there are rough patches. After all, you didn’t grow up with your in-laws – you started the “getting to know you” phase some time around your engagement (or marriage, in some cases). There are bound to be rough patches for the first few years as you get to know each other. If you (or they) are the kind of person to hold a grudge, it can be a problem. But for everybody else, these things definitely get better over time.
