I find this very touching. I have an almost 8 year old dog who acts like he is 2 or 3. But I know someday he will feel his age. I want to enjoy everyday I have with him.(And we walk everyday, sometimes twice and in the dead of winter too)
I’ve had two dogs that were in puppy mode right until the very end, and my current girl is five years and still acts like 5 weeks (which hurts, because she’s 85 pounds). It was saddest day ever when one of them, a 12 year old golden retriever, suddenly became partially paralyzed due to a blood clot in his spine. The vet came to the house, and his front half was just as excited as ever but his back half could not move, and he was becoming very scared because e couldn’t understand what was wrong. She had to euthanize him there.
My four year old aussie shepard/great pyrenees mix loves his walks especially when there is snow on the ground….and we have long winters here in northern Maine. After having some serious health issues last year, I hope we’ll be able to grow old together. I should be okay, but you never know.
Go Walkies was both our dog’s dearest thing to hear. Neither one lived long enuff for that to become a “yeah, lemme see if I can get up” thing. But it sure was fun while it lasted and we still talk about them, while we go on our Walkies!!!
On the same theme, that sounds like something my dad would have said. When he was in a nursing home and my brother would visit and say come on, dad, let’s take a walk. He would reply with can’t we take the car? Not to make light of his illness, (he had dementia), but it was funny.
Our current two are a May / November pair. Our older guy always had a funny run — he’d hunch his back while furiously pumping front and back legs, always moving in tandem. Now he’s paired with a young guy who is respectful but pushes him into play despite his arthritic paw (he and I share the same “bad paw” days, but with me it’s knees.) So he now charges around the yard like a rocking horse, kinda all the parts frozen in place with front and back rocking up and down while he chases the youngster around the yard. They’re a riot!

At least the spirit is willing. Even when they have to drag themselves they still want to go.

Right now I have an almost 12 year old puppy Shiba Inu that bounces everywhere. He will jump in the car if you don’t close the door fast enough.
