It’s always been that way, even back in ancient Greece where it all began. Only difference back then was that it wasn’t countries that competed, but the various city states that made up what is now Greece.
I think it’s just the media covering it that keep the medal counts. I’ve seen differing medal counts on different news outlets, using different criteria to count. Naturally, they always give the higher count to the country the news outlet originates in.
Here’s one for Rory to ponder: If the NHL isn’t a league where you represent your country, how come so many Canadians are obsessed with wanting a team based in a Canadian city to win the Stanley Cup?

They’re also called “games” when in fact, a few events are games, the majority are sports and WAY too many are just show-off exhibitions.
