Lived on O’ahu for three years (military duty in the early 90’s) and the only time I recall wearing a lei was the ceremony where I was awarded my graduate degree (go HPU!).
A real lei uses natural materials and takes time & effort to build. And the more intricate ones can be a bit more expensive than you might expect (but then, naturally, everything on the Hawaiian islands is a bit expensive). Outside the tourist haunts I don’t recall seeing too many folks with a lei, but it was over 20 years ago and I could be remembering it wrong.

And when they get there, Norm’ll find a tiki that brings them bad luck.

If he doesn’t want to look like a tourist, then maybe he should take off that hat.

Are they going to allow him to wear that hat in the plane?

Instead, he’ll look like an idiot.

They won’t get very far on a plane without a starboard wing.

Just got back from Hawaii. They don’t do the leis at the airport any more. Everyone was disappointed, I figured it was because of 9-11. Not sure?

I went to Hawai’i in 2004 and got lei’d on arrival.
