I suppose dogs, like people, do what is natural until they are trained or constrained not to. I don’t believe they all do exactly the same thing though. I believe what comes naturally can be a very individualistic thing. Poncho is a pretty distinct individual.
Our dog never barked at squirrels. She would try to sneak up on them by crawling almost like a cat, and then pounce. Many times she trapped it, but the squirrel would wriggle out. Now she’s so old, she just stares out and the squirrels come up really close and smell her and sort of talk to her using their squirrely language…

When walking my dogs, all I need to do is say the word “squirrel” and they get all excited and start looking around.
