Maybe the reason he was a fire chief was because if there was a fire at your house, he would make sure that the fire department got there really quickly. He cared that much about his family.
I took two years of German in high school and I remember only random bits of the dialogues we used to practice (Nein, Sie ist am Sonntag geschlossen!) and random words I strung together because they just sound very German — or funny (Das Flugzeug in den Wohnzimmer).

German is my first love in foreign languages, but I just didn’t have a chance to stay in practice with it. Spanish has been more useful in that sense.
