My cats all learned that what was put in the dish was the food they had. It stayed there until they ate it. If they turned up their noses, they went hungry for the next 24 hours. A couple of turns of that, and they ate every last morsel almost as fast as I could put it into the dish. By the way, I fed my cats 3 times a day.

One of my cats would actually paw her food off the dish/plate one kibble at a time before eating said kibble.
