In our house, it was a big deal to get your own library card. You had to be able to print your name. I still remember getting mine when I was four. Our library was tiny. It fit in the backroom of the local hardware store. Soon, it was moved across the street into a two story town house and when I was in middle-school, the county built a stand-alone building for the library.
The best part – Mom always allowed us to choose our own books. As long as we were reading something, she would say. And read, we did- newspapers, comics, books, the backs of cereal boxes. We didn’t have a TV.
The suburb where I grew up has the “McGill Branch” of the Burnaby Public Library, named for a pioneer librarian. Grace McGill issued me my first library card in 1956.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s there was commercial for something to get"Johnny" to read. My parents would joke about needing something to get Mary (me) to read less as they could not keep up with books for me.
