Haven’t had a wrong number call in quite some time. Wrong texts on the other hand……..always wondered if whoever figured out what they did.

Still waiting for “Heather” to call my number and ask why her pants haven’t been hemmed yet, as per a very long-winded answering machine message from the person who was supposed to be hemming them.

I once found a long message from an elderly woman on my work number, apparently to someone in her family, detailing all the news of her life, discussing relatives, etc. We didn’t have the function that identifies the calling number and she didn’t leave it. I felt sorry that her message was just lost in the ether…

I used to get faxes from a vet’s office in my studio (back when faxes were a thing) and, worried that some animals weren’t getting their proper care because of mis-directed faxes, I got in touch with the vet office. They took it wrong and said, “Woooooo, we’re SOOOO sorry we took up a CARTOONIST’S time with our faxes! Gosh! Golly!” So I hung up and went back to throwing their faxes away. Currently doing the same with an Atlanta doctor’s emails who apparently uses my webcomic’s e-ddress occasionally.

I had a number that was close to a nursing home and would occasionally get calls from family asking for so-and-so. I would let them know they had the wrong number, but was very tempted to prank them and say something like, “Oh, we’re very sorry you weren’t informed but Mrs. Soandso passed away last week.” Of course, I never did that.

All of this makes you wonder why we drive on the parkway and park on the driveway, doesn’t it?

The first number we had for our landline used to belong to a pediatrician. We had emergency calls day and night. We had the number changed (this is 40 years ago).

So the new number we were given used to belong to an attorney and we did get some calls for him, but we kept it as it was a convenient number to remember.

However it was similar to a TV repair shop’s number and an optician’s number. When Domino’s pizza opened in the area several of them had similar numbers to our – including a very local one which also had the first 3 digits similar to ours.

We would get calls rarely for the TV guy. The pizza and the optician on the other hand – we would get lots of calls for both. We tried putting an ad for our handmade craft business on the answering machine (which is always on) but it was ignored. This is back when Domino’s delivered in 30 minutes. Typical messages left -“This is Mrs. Jones. I would like a large cheese pie delivered and I am timing you.”“This is Mr. Smith. I have decided not to have my contact lenses tinted.”I hate to think of the later contacts between the customers and the businesses.

At one point we were getting almost constant calls for the optician. I telephoned and asked for the manager and explained that we had a similar phone number,we receive messages for them from time to time, but since there are suddenly so many of them,if they recently had new business cards, etc. printed, perhaps they should check them. I thought I was being nice. He was extremely nasty. On the other hand, the calls did go back to their normal number. We also started getting threatening calls for the manager from bill collectors. Apparently while the place was being redone, he was not getting paid or something and was not paying his bills.

The TV place’s number became a doctor’s phone number. We will get a call every now and then for the doctor. Oddly they are more likely to come from hospitals, labs and the like than from patients and generall
