His name as president is Dr. Mabuse, so that’s not really his name. That name belongs to a character from a German novel that went on to be the main character in a number of films.
Fritz Lang is in the house!! Mabuse is an awesome name drop. Well done on the Lang/noir overview, Neil. Been a big fan ever since I took some Film Studies classes back in college and learned about the German Expressionists. They also laid the foundation for the horror genre as well. Tod Browning’s “Dracula” with Bela Lugosi was heavily influenced by Lang, and especially F.W. Murnau’s ”Nosferatu”.
And in a happy bit of coincidence, the wonderful site “Open Culture” just posted a list of 10 essential German Expressionism films along with links to where you can watch them online. FOR FREE!
Ever get the feeling these Minit Mystreries are actually secret auditions for Team Tracy’s next artist? (Not that I’m anxious to see the current one go, but for my money, this Burchett fellow is definitely on the short list…)
Blackjack can only be a kind of anti-villain in my book, since he is such a fan (and wannabe friend) of Tracy. But if these are the second trio of cosplayed villain-suspects, then at least we may have our full roster and can spend the whole of next week solving the crime….
As a side note, I recall seeing a couple of “Dr. Mabuse” movies (or was it only one, seen more than once?) on TV, back when late night was filled with old and/or B movies, that had a decidedly sleazy aspect (probably from the 1950s or maybe 1960s)….

And that may be the rest of our suspects: Blackjack, Shaky, and Pruneface.

Today’s strip is a reminder that Dick Tracy’s Rogue’s Gallery is almost as bizarre as Batman’s.

Good renderings of the Tracy villains by Burchett.

Excellent renderings of Shakey, pruneface, and blackjack. Shakey’s is especially sinister.
