“Let me tell you what she said about my nails…” Hmm, did Earl give her a ten penny for her thoughts? Or is that hammering home his point? Could be a sign of a staple relationship but it might be he’s just having a brad dream. Finishing off their conversation would just be tacky.

Dogs are perceived to be better listeners. They sit there and take in what a person says, and are just happy for the attention. That behavior encourages more attention, and dogs are more than happy to comply so that they get additional attention. Husbands, at that age, have heard it all before and therefore zone out. (There’s a reason Earl is my avatar.)

No one, even pets, needs to know about cuticles. Say something interesting and he might listen..

First of all Earl is just checking his eyelids…..from the inside. 2nd dogs listen because they think that they will get a yummie for the tummy !

The funniest “Pickles” strip was when Earl was telling his grandson that he was a speed listener & he always finished listening to Opal much sooner than she was done talking.

Maybe Earl should pretend to commit suicide like Archie Bunker did when Edith was prattling on endlessly.

My grandmother used to tell me: " Yer like Billy Weir, what ye don’t want, ye don’t hear ! "

I found out ( finally ) that Billy Weir was a character from my grandmother’s town of Portadown, in County Armagh, N.Ireland who used to pretend he was deaf.

Conversations between you and your manicurist should be kept private……unless it is really good gossip that would even keep Earl awake.

Earl and Opal’s glasses are just drawn, as requested to cartoonist Crane, so they can discretely ‘rest their eyes’ when the other is taking.
