Actually, Mutt started in 1907, Jeff came a bit later. And it was a sports strip, not always funny. Mutt would gamble on the horses, and the strip would track his winning and losses, like a modern sports gambling column, but in comic strip format.
I have a book of those strips from 1910. It’s fun. But Mutt needs help with his gambling addiction. The strip has him jumping through a closed window to get to the track because he just got a tip on a horse.
Mutt was consigned to an insane asylum. A series of docs had diagnoses, one of which said that all that he found in Mutt’s head was a thimble full of ferryboat smoke – a much better gag than this – and that’s where he met Jeff. Jeff thought he was James J. Jeffries, the heavyweight boxer, and they were off on a long comic strip career.
The Benders have retired from Alley Oop. I think Scancarelli should do the same with Gasoline Alley. It’s gone stale, in my opinion.
Gasoline Alley needs to keep going. It’s still good. And besides, I read about a dozen or so different strips here every day, and more than half of them are reruns, which is a bit disconcerting. A lot of the brand new titles just aren’t that funny or interesting.

The combined age of everyone in today’s strip is astronomical, huh? ✨

Is this the beginning of returning to ‘black and white’?
