Just love when GPS sends someone 30 miles out of there way…….have had to give folks directions many times…….problem being same street name but different township………………..
As my husband says: “Sometimes you gotta.” Like the time the GPS wanted us to use someone’s driveway to get between streets or the time it wanted us to take our 37 foot RV with a car in two across a ditch and through a field to reach our campground.
Maps are much better for planning, but they can’t tell you where you are. On the other hand a GPS can’t tell you what kind or quality of road to expect. Internet maps can be a real pain with the constant re-routing in heavy traffic. You have to know the limitations of each system.
True plugger couples have the husband (who is of course driving) arguing with the GPS and ignoring the wife with the map. Eventually, they will arrive at a gas station where hubby will send the wife into the station to ask directions which he will then disagree with . . . and of course it is always the wife’s fault when they arrive late . . .
I like GPS for unfamiliar places and hotel locations, otherwise I ignore it, but I like to leave it on just to see where they would recommend when I’m going somewhere that I have gone a hundred times. Sometimes spot on – sometimes too far out of the way. Of course for unfamiliar places – I generally know how to get there highway-wise [no interstates].
My experience with GPS is limited since I don’t drive, but it is interesting to see what the GPS advises the Uber drivers and cab drivers. It sometimes will advise a convoluted route with many side streets, when just a straight shot down a main street and a couple of turns will suffice. It sends them entering and exiting the interstate to “save time”, which takes more time than staying on the regular streets. The worst is that it tells them to turn the wrong direction on a couple of one-way streets I’m familiar with, which is rather hair-raising! I remember to tell the driver in advance if I know we are going in the vicinity of one. I guess on the whole they are helpful, but still not quite as reliable as a human.
