The only “… for dummies” book I have is Japanese. Thought it’d be more helpful than the two other books I got at either Barnes/Noble, or Powell’s (in Portland, Oregon), or one at each place.

Face it, Jason. You are left out of this culture. You are intelligent. Most other people are dummies. The rest are morons and idiots.

Jason seems hung up on the C Programming language. I wonder if the author has any familiarity with it.

The only “dummies” book I ever read was “Minecraft for Dummies” when I was younger.

20 years ago, book stores had a large section of I.T. books. But, I.T. people learned on-line stores had even bigger selections. Going on-line, they could find books more finely tuned to what they wanted. Now, the I.T. section in a book store is tiny.

23 comments and not one of you noticed the special guest stars.

And as a former librarian, I can state with authority that there are not enough books in the “X for Complete Idiots” genre.

I used to get Dummies books all the time. They’re great for getting started in a subject, I particularly appreciated them when I was learning to code. I must say, though, I don’t care for the Spanish for Dummies, but when you consider the hundreds of titles (and authors), you can’t expect them all to be winners.

Note, I did say ‘for getting started’. They are, as far as I have found, strictly for beginners. And every one I’ve read starts out with “you aren’t a dummy, and you can learn this”, or words to that effect. If you already have some knowledge of the topic, don’t bother.

I remember when I guy I worked with purchased a book filled with web page addresses, basically saying that Coca-Cola was at http://www.coke.com/, that kind of thing. Thick book. I wonder how many of those URLs are even valid today? Considering that was the mid- to late-1990s, I’m guessing most are gone. I’m lookin’ at you, AltaVista.
