Here’s what I think is a really elegant solution.
Hook those wires up to an overhead net, like a super-low voltage bumper car. That way, the wires always stay up out of the way and no one trips.
I was leaning the other way, e.g. when the helmet’s sensors detect an illegal hit, the player receives a powerful electric shock, thereby conditioning the player.
Rig the helmet like laser tag, trigger it – disqualification for a quarter.
