After spending almost their entire summer vacation in small, boxy, windowless rooms – the kids suddenly decided to go swimming during the LAST week of summer? Wonder if they will still be in the pool when leaves begin to fall and snow begins to swirl around in the rest of the world?
Although the science is dubious (the balloon would need helium to help when in the air, or conversely, the air filled balloon would need to be in the more dense water to increase buoyancy), from a traditional Bushmiller-esque “sight gag” type of comic… this works beautifully!
Very cute! One very minor, small aside…. I believe the kids are at a public pool… the probability of having significant wave action would be low…. to me, the water line in panel one is a bit cock-eyed making it seem like there is a wave forming. It is not a big deal in any way. I just mention it because it was noticeable to me.
Addendum: In thinking this through further…. I do believe there is some inherent benefit for Nancy to use an atmospheric air filled bubblegum balloon in this contest with Sluggo. The goal was to float the longest. So, theoretically if the gum’s strength is such that it can withstand the pressure…. if Nancy grows tired and starts to sink… the bubble of air will still allow her to “float” by the gum bubble providing buoyancy from SINKING.

Ms. Jaimes is hitting her stride. This is one of her best. I will bet that Jimmy Johnson likes today’s strip.

I believe this is the first time Nancy blew a bubble for the Olivia Jaimes era.

Nancy will walk on water next.

That was funny. For some reason it made me want a bazooka joe comic and bubble gum.
