Ah yes for the Good Old Days when Sears and many other American Icons were managed properly……and still in business !….……As in the wild the death of one gives life to another…….
You even could buy a house, shipped by rail with everything needed including the nails. There used to be several here, but unfortunately gone to make room for more up-to-date business as with Sears itself.
Worked at Sears in the mid 70’s while going to University. Full timers could make a good living just on commission (6 percent of sales). Saw the beginning of the end when there was talk about doing away with the catalog, central cashiering and making a big push into “soft lines” (clothing) and away from hardware.

If Sears had transitioned to the Amazon model, they would still rule the retail world.

There was always a monthly sales flyer and manager’s clearance specials.

Sears.. and others were the Amazon’s of the time. Technology moves on replacing any number of established enterprises.

There was also Montgomery Wards – aka “Monkey” Wards. They had a huge store of several floors in Albany, NY and they were also a catalog center.

There was always a battle at our house between my siblings and me whenever the Christmas toy catalogs started showing up in the mail!

As I recall, there were several large mail order catalogs – Sears, but also Montgomery Ward and JC Penney.
