ABC did a short-lived series in 1969 called “The New People”, about a group of college students stranded on an island who try create their own society.

The premise of The New People was a simple one. A group of roughly forty American college students were on a cultural exchange tour in Southeast Asia, sponsored by the State Department. The tour was cancelled because the students were too radical and outspoken and the State Department ordered them back to the United States. While flying home, their plane met encountered a severe storm and crashed on an island somewhere in the South Pacific. The following day, the “new people” began to explore.

The pilot episode of the series was written (under a pseudonym) by… Rod Serling.

A new one of the will never end just die in ennui type TV shows starts Monday. It is called Manifest about a plane that disappeared 5 years ago showing up with all on board the same as when they left. Series like these should be like American Horror Story and end after one season. Instead it will linger and end badly.

I had a parent who was a social worker and thought Lost was fascinating – a great way to study interaction of disparate personalities. I thought it was a stupid unrealistic incongruous mixup of personality traits, let alone the environmental situations and plot turns. Couldn’t stand more than 10 minutes before I’d get up and leave because of some total implausibility. “That wouldn’t happen.” “They wouldn’t do that.” “Where’d that come from?” “That guy would never act like that.” Etc.

I owned/watched the entire series – I wish someone would explain the plots to me.

    I’d rather watch Gilligan’s Island.

Great show! As far as implausibility ( drycurt), that’s because, as it turned out, none of it was real.

Monty and Moondog, stranded (again!) on a small desert island, and the best Monty has to offer is plot summaries from Lost?! You could, you know, get away with murder here, Moonie….

I tried (and failed) to watch Lost at least 3 times. I would start from episode one but by episode 4-5 I just couldn’t go on. Then I’d walk away for a few years and try again from the beginning but I just can’t get into it. One weekend I was determined to binge watch as much as I could but I got tired of it and moved on to something else. Glad I didn’t waste my time watching it through to the end.
