My son coached my granddaughters’ teams. Now that they are older, they are very good athletes at the game. However in the early going, I remember him trying to position the players, “Emily, go stand over there by that flower.”
I also have a picture of him bending over and giving the team some instruction. The girls are lined up and two of them are “doing” other girls’ hair.
I supposed that’s one difference between boys and girls. Ask a boy about the game and you’ll get a play-by-play account. Ask a girl and you’ll get who was there and what she was wearing. And no, this isn’t sexist: it’s observation.
I have a special needs child who I coached when he was kindergarten age. One game he scored 3 times for his team, one time for the other team and one goal on the next field over. It was cute then but within a few years not so much as the other children progressed and he was left behind.

Nothing is more endearing than to watch the really little kids play soccer.

The only reason your son scored was my son was the goalie.
