A few years later when the baby would be abducted by his mother and Walt would spend several weeks tracking them down, the comic was would be flooded with hundreds of letters daily of people who thought they had spotted the mother and baby all around the country. Comic strips were a huge deal before the days of TV and the Internet. They were a major form of entertainment in home all across the country. The annual “walk in the woods” in GA had the same kind of culture significance as Lucy, Charlie Brown and the football.
And comics back then usually had a whole 12 paneled page to themselves. Some newspapers were NY Times sized and you can imagine how large they were. Not the scrunched six panels three by four inches today.

At the height of their popularity, comic strips were media juggernauts, often being spun off into radio and movie series. ✨

I thought the baby was named about 80 years ago. Why rehash it now? We really don’t care.

I think Walt might be allowing himself to be a bit carried away . . .But I love it just the same.
