In the late 1980s, my best friend’s grandmother died. She asked me to look after her sister’s 4 kids while they went out-of-state to the funeral.
I have since learned to say “NO”.
The mom left me a check, but I couldn’t get to the bank until Monday, and this was Saturday. No problem, I had one of those new debit cards! Get to the grocery store with 4 kids under 10, go to the ATM – kids start squabbling, fighting, screaming…
I turn to deal with this, and the ATM ate my card for taking too long. It went down hill from there. That was the LONGEST week of my life.
So, no, I wouldn’t take the kids back to school shopping. Come to think of it, my mom never took my brother and I, except when clothing had to be tried on. Smart mom.
A true sign of the times. My mother had 5 of us in the span of 9 years (boy-girl-boy-girl-girl) and always took us shopping. Of course, we knew how to behave because if you didn’t behave, you did not really want to go back home. I remember the shopping trips as far back as 4 because I was upset I was not going to school. My younger sister would have been 1 at the time and my oldest brother 10.
Hated back to school shopping, school gave you a list then the teachers added too it. Had 1 teacher wanted all red folders with prong and pockets.. Told when she found some I would like to know were so I could find them other wise she will get what I had.. stores sold out…and make sure all pens are the same color… heave for bid you kid’s pen ran out of ink and borrowed from some one else no black and blue in the paper… Now my grand kids are having the fun..with the greats….

Well, if you didn’t want them, you should have said, “No”.

Children, like fine wine, should be kept in a cool, dark place until sufficiently mature….
