I once took a test that covered material we hadn’t learned yet, and hadn’t been taught in the books yet. Everyone failed, and this was deliberate. The teacher wanted to teach us to go above and beyond. Several students got beaten by their parents for failing. We learned which drawer she kept the tests in, instead.
A required course was American History. You read the book and found the answers to the multiple choice homework. We exchanged papers, graded them and handed them in. You had to attend to get homework credit. We had read the assignment, so the lecture was a fun expansion of what was going on in world history in parallel with the assignment.
It seems the options for their failing grades are:1) The boys didn’t study2) The test was poorly written3) Both
Options 1 and 3 both seem likely; I had a class in college where I blew the bell curve by 15 points even though I got a D on the test. I studied really hard, because the teacher was terrible at explaining the material. It turned out he was also terrible at writing exams.

Self fulfilling prophecy.

Don’t you just hate it when teachers expect you to actually learn stuff in their class?

The knowledge of the subject was completely inconsequential, except for the denial of advanced education in any other subject.

I have all the right answers, it just that they ask the wrong questions.

And there you have a version of the self fulfilling prophecy.
