I used to do the SAR thing with the Civil Air Patrol. It didn’t take too long to notice that folks never seemed get lost in good weather or in easy to find spots… well most of the time.
Actually, on my last search before “retiring” from the CAP, we had an accurate radar fix on the aircraft that went missing. We found it in less than an hour from the time we launched using only a single aircraft looking in a single search grid. And we managed to get back on the ground before the next storm blew thru the area. That is not how it goes most of the time… 8^(
And I always carried dog treats as part of my survival gear! I wanted to improve the odds I would be be found if I ever became the searchee. 8^)

Why is it that when we do actually find these lost people they’re in the last place we look?

Because those are the same ones already getting lost on the mountain.
