The strip stopped in the 1980s, yet we have a reference to George W. Bush. So they make changes to the original while maintaining the dated appearance? What’s the point?

By the time there was a G.W.B, there had been no C.I.O. for well over half a century. I hate it when someone tries to “update” a classic comic. It would have been just as funny with “FDR” or “HST.”

FDR, JFK, and LBJ were known by their initials because their last names were hard to fit in newspaper headlines. Eisenhower was known as Ike for the same reason. Truman, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, both Bushes, Clinton, Obama, and Trump have had names short enough to use without abbreviation, as did all the presidents preceding FDR during the run of this strip (except his cousin Teddy). The CIO existed as a separate organization only from 1935-1955, when it merged with the AFL. So presumably the president originally mentioned was FDR … and even during most of his time in office, the strip had the look of a period decades earlier! So, editors, please let us enjoy Mutt & Jeff for what it is—there’s no way to disguise it as a product of the 21st century, and no point in trying.

I hate it when Go Comics takes it upon themselves to change the original dialogue in classic strips, like Mutt and Jeff! Mutt and Jeff went out of syndication in 1983 – so they might have known about the FIRST Bush – but NOT the second Bush. When TIIC take it upon themselves to tinker with the original dialogue – they usually end up with jokes which make no sense whatsoever. I’d be willing to guess that Mutt and Jeff were more likely talking about people like FDR and HST qnd maybe organizations like the WPA In the meantime – I will translate – TIIC means The Idiots In Charge and – hopefully – someone at Go Comics would decide that, when it comes to fiddling with original dialogue in classic comice – they will CIO – Cut It Out!
