    Fortunately I was post-pubescent when I had that in my senior year at school. I can’t say it had much effect on me anyway. “Robinson Crusoe” was more interesting.

    Yes, there are so many others books that might more readily engage an adolescent’s interest. Assign “Walden” in college when a student may be more receptive to abstract concepts. Too many teachers fixate on a book that had meaning for them, often at an older age than the students they are teaching, & thus he/she assign books that will not interest the students causing a failure for both teacher & students. I know because I saw many, many inappropriate assignments as both a public & academic reference librarian.
