Seems like the owl has found himself in a jarring situation.

Yeah, even our “genius” gets it wrong – the opposite of “all owls are geniuses” is NOT “all owls are not geniuses”, it is either “not all owls are geniuses” or “some owls are not geniuses”.

Why are there three leaves on the branch in the last panel and only one in the first panel?

It’s FALL, so don’t say that they grew!

But generally the cliche is true: The clearest mark of intelligence, even “genius,” is awareness of one’s limits and ignorance.
