To me it looks like a doner kebab (or Döner Kebab as they say here). The vertical rotisserie was invented in the 19th-century Ottoman Empire, and doner kebab inspired similar dishes such as the Arab shawarma, Greek gyros, and Mexican al pastor.
My favorite taco place has changed their al pastor – I think they’re cooking the meat in sauce rather than using the spit. Haven’t checked yelp yet, but I will be calling them to request they change it back. I’d rather they raised the price (they charge less than for carne asada) than cheapen the product.

I’ll pass on the taco this one bit and go for a shawarma.

People in the Trump administration like Mexican food. I don’t know what their opinion of shawarma is.

I had to Google “shawarma” to learn what it is. I’d never heard of it.
