Perhaps Farley is barking because, judging from the fence we see in Panel 2, he is in the Pattersons’ front yard, which means he, once again, has been allowed to run free in the neighborhood, and he wants to protest their negligent dog ownership the only way he can, by barking.

Maybe they need to put on his barking brake.

My dog used to bark just to see if he’d get a reaction.

We had a white german shepherd that was absolutely convinced that he was keeping the jets on the flight path to Ontario airport out of our back yard. He joyfully barked at every one of them.

Our dogs never barked just for the heck of it. They were really good at spotting something out of order and let us know by different kind of intonations to their barks. We learned after a while what they meant by those barks. I was always amazed at their intelligence. It’s as if they were talking to us…

Elly, what is the matter with you? Farley’s a dog. He doesn’t understand what you’re saying.

Dogs understand tone as do cats. More so than the words but it depends on the animal. He might have been barking at the blowing leaves in the wind.

One of my cats likes to wait until everyone is in bed at night with the house quiet and dark to decide to walk around meowing loudly. She does this a few times a week and none of us have figured out why.

If dogs are bored, they take a nap. Good advice for us all.
