One of the running jokes of this comic strip is how much people and dogs hate being brushed by Elly. Farley hates it. Elizabeth hates it. The characters that follow both those characters all hate it.
My Australian Cattle Dog loves it. In the morning when I sit at my desk, he comes up and puts his forelegs on my lap so I can brush his back with his dogbrush.
We had one of those rubber-fingered brush-mitts for our cats. They loved it, especially our big silver mackerel tabby, Mitch. Mitch LOVED being brushed by that mitt.
None of my dogs ever liked to be brushed, but I had a German Shepard that loved to be vacuumed. As soon as he saw me get the vacuum, he’d lay down and wait for me to run the hose attachment over him. Then he’d roll over and let me do the other side. Greatest dog ever. We still miss him.
Our cat and dog both love being brushed :) We use those ones with retractable bristles, especially come summer. The cat just loves to lie on me, while hubby brushes him, talk about a loud motor! And I swear the dog would purr if she could :)
That’s not any of my dogs (many over the years)- any kind of attention was love to them – brush, massage, belly rubs, cuddling, etc. …well, not baths, of course.
I used to have Old English Sheepdogs, cute lovable dogs, but lord were they stupid. We’d go to the park, they would go nuts when they saw the squirrels. The squirrels would run up tree A and the dogs would be barking at tree B. One time the squirrels stopped about half way up to look at the dogs. I swear they shrugged and then continued up the tree.
My brides dog would hide, every time, when the brush came out, but a few minutes after the brushing started, she would fall asleep. My bride would have to wake her up to turn the dog over, and bang, right back to sleep.

My dog enjoys getting massaged, but hates getting brushed. The difference is that brushing pulls his hair.

BRUSH BRUSH BRUSH
No wonder Farley is annoyed; brushing his hair produces a very loud sound.

Not quite the “love and attention” Farley had in mind. His mind probably ran more to biscuits and balls.

my dogs don’t mind a nightly brushing but mostly because when we are done, we play a bit and have treats.

The one place Angel feared to tread was anywhere near the hairbrush.
