Lynn is mocking Elly’s efforts to be clear, by showing that she is anything but clear. As I understand it other jokes considered by Lynn Johnston were:
John: But Elly, it’s covered with flaps and arrows, and colored patches and dotted lines.
Elly: I know. I want to make what happened look as simple as possible.
Elly: I know. The defendant with the nicest chart wins.
Elly: I know. The judge will see from my chart that what happened is as plain as the nose on my face.
Elly: I know. It’s even waterproof, so the judge can see my argument is able to hold water.
Elly: I know. Who wouldn’t believe a woman who can make a chart as believable as this one?
Elly: I know. I colored a lot of it blue, so the judge can see my testimony is true blue.
Elly: I know. My diagram is going to be so much better than the one the police have.
Reminds me of the old Odd Couple episode where Felix is Oscar’s Lawyer…“When you ASSUME, you make an ASS of U and ME!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEP1acj29-Y
There’s only one thing that matters, and we weren’t told or shown enough to know. It matters if the other guy was using a parking space to get around the bus or it he was in a traffic lane. If he was in a traffic lane, she failed to yield right of way to him, and she’s fried. You don’t get to guess whether there’s traffic coming. If he was using a parking space, he should have been cited, so I expect she was in the wrong.
So…Is that chart going to clearly show how you turned into the on-coming lane of traffic? After all is said and done, if that action had not occurred, there would be no accident.
No point in debating among ourselves whether or not Elly is at fault. This will all shake out in the next couple of weeks and we’ll hear the judge’s verdict.

Reminds me of that trial back in Stockbridge MA
Morning, when we all had to go to court. We walked in, sat down, Obie came
In with the twenty-seven 8 times 10 colored glossy pictures with the circles and
Arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one, sat down
Man came in, said, “All rise!” We all stood up, and Obie stood up with the
Twenty-seven 8 times 10 colored glossy pictures, and the judge walked in, sat
Down, with a seein’ eye dog and he sat down. We sat down
Obie looked at the seein’ eye dog then at the twenty-seven 8 × 10
Colored glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the
Back of each one and looked at the seein’ eye dog and then at
The twenty-seven 8 × 10 colored glossy pictures with the circles and arrows
And a paragraph on the back of each on and began to cry
Because Obie came to the realization that it was a typical case of American
Blind justice, and there wasn’t nothin’ he could do about it, and the judge
Wasn’t gonna look at the twenty-seven 8 by 10 colored glossy pictures with
The circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explainin’
What each one was, to be used as evidence against us

Lynn’s Notes:
I did make up a detailed diagram and it did have flaps on it to show how the accident happened. I was grateful for my training as an animator!

The more explanation the guiltier you look. Sounds like she’s trying to convince herself as well as the judge.
