I didn’t like Olivia Jaimes “Nancy” when it first appeared as so many of the strips dealt with kids and modern technology but, in my opinion, it has improved considerably over time and a lot of the humor now, such as the “Joke” in today’s strip, is akin to that of the great Ernie Bushmiller. I am now a fan.

The irony is, the effort to keep the power bill low by lowering the heat is undermined by the use of the vacuum, but who would object to a child taking on the task of cleaning the carpet?

Fritzi! Once more, the eyes (and eyebrows) bring it all home.

Well, that’s one way to get the living room vacuumed…

In other news, The Daily Cartoonist has some background info on Olivia Jaimes’ appearance at the Cartoon Crossroads Colombus Comic Convention (which I’m sure is fun to say):

although it really just links to a New York Magazine article pronted by Vulture here:

    It’s a good article.

This is the first time in a long while I’ve seen such an awesome old fashioned vacuum cleaner in a strip. These days, they don’t last long. Had to ditch my previous one, since they didn’t have any parts for it, and it was still in great shape after twenty years of use.

Also, you know it’s cold when Nancy wears thick socks and a thick blanket. Lastly, I much prefer the modern aunt Fritzy.

She’s running the vacuum in the house, Fritzi – take it and run.

Hoo boy. I love this one. It’s full of little kid logic.

Very nice…. Nancy…. you still do what you want…. but inadvertently also help Aunt Fritzi. In some ways that seems like it would be a bit of a conundrum for you…. but still very good!

Today’s drawing…. I am especially liking a) how Aunt Fritzi’s eyes are drawn as she looks back at Nancy. Very effective and nicely done. I also really like b) Aunt Fritzi’s hair is drawn today. I really like the more “up” style Olivia has drawn for her today. A final, more subtle detail that is interesting to me is c) Nancy’s sock. Most of the time she has been wearing an “ankle” sock. Today it seems like a crew or calf length sock. It works well in the story with her feeling cold. I like the addition of the little red stripe on it too.

This is classic Bushmiller. (That is, Bushmiller-like. Ms. Jaimes is not a plagiarist.)

I still don’t like the new Nancy. I skip it most days anymore. All the characters are always frowning and griping.

Hey, when did I become a “premium member”? I was happier as a GC Insider. Of course, the “creator” tag is the kewlest. “Premium” is a word used by time shares, credit card companies, and porn sites. I think the most expensive membership on GoComics should make you an inductee in the “usual gang of idiots.” Premium member? It’s about as creative as a Walgreens color scheme.
