This is one of the rare story lines where Jane truly succeeds and is the hero. Somewhat accidentally, true, but most people don’t know that and she is greeted as the returning hero.
Thinking over all of her more common story lines, it reminds me of another well-known comic, Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts”. Charlie Brown is basically Sparky’s alter-ego, down to the little red-headed girl he once met as a boy. Jane is clearly Paige’s alter-ego. I wonder if those similarities and outlook and output are part of the reason why Paige and Sparky developed such a deep friendship and why Paige has continued carrying on Sparky’s legacy.
I remember the first time I read this story I was quite angry at how an author could copy a film so shamelessly. But now it thinks it’s just a funny story.
