We used to have a self-cleaning litter box. Our cat would use it and then sit near it to watch it clean. Then the cat would go again. And watch again. We went through a lot of litter before the cat got bored with it.
My sister turned me on to using wood pellets instead of the clumping litter. Pee breaks it down to sawdust and the poop just sits there for scooping and you throw it out when it’s mostly dust. It’s a lot lighter too which is a benefit when you’re 70.
We had a cat that would get in the litter box, hang her butt over the side and poo/pee on the floor. Tried every kind of expensive kitty litter there was to no avail. Then I tried plain old dirt.Problem solved – the cat loved it.
Ok, this is true. When I was 7 I was playing in the basement with a friend. I had to pee like crazy, but I didn’t want to have to run all the way upstairs. Sooooo, I went in the cat’s litter box, and as I did, I made a game out of “darkening” ALL of the litter. About ten minutes later my mother came down into the basement to drop off a bag of potatoes and she saw the totally wet litter box and in her horror, called to my father "Gordon! Something is wrong with the cat!! My dad came down to take a look and said “Holy Smokes!!” Dad went and grabbed our cat and whisked him off to the vet’s office. Though I loved my cat dearly, I kept sheepishly quiet the entire time, never intervening to prevent the needless trip to the vet’s. I hang my head in shame to this day.

Very true. If the cat is afraid of the litter box, you never have to clean it again.

Looks good but I think I’ll wait for the iLitterBot. It’ll be able to empty itself.

Reminds me of how dogs tend to view litter boxes. “Ooooooh, look! Crunchy treats!”

Wait until the robot develops AI and spews all over the carpet when it realizes what it’s eating.
