I once saw an article that points out that the reason the world seems so much worse when you’re an adult is because your parents shield you from all the bad stuff, and the news shields you from all the good stuff.
Getting Out the Vote sure helped me this summer and fall. Still waiting for the rest of the mail-in ballots, though. Maybe it IS time to hug a unicorn!
I can understand why (fictional) child Phoebe might be upset at seeing the news (though I can’t recall an instance where its affected my nine-year-old grandson), but as adults, we are not only responsible for managing the world in a mature manner, but making sure children in our lives don’t have to.
I went through this in ‘67-’68. Though I was still in grade school I worried that all of the colleges would be burned down by the time I was old enough. Between the Vietnam war, war protests, race riots, nukes, and the Middle East, it was a very bad span. The saving grace for me was the moon landings in ’69; I guess that was my unicorn.
What kid watches the news? Although, my mom made me watch JFK’s funeral all those years ago because it was history in the making. (I was 10.) Now I’m glad she did.
Sounds as though Dad was reading about the Trouble we had here in Pittsburgh. Although while nothing specific is mentioned from what Phoebe read, I guess this week’s arc could be applied to Bad News from “ANYONES Backyard”. And Yes, Phoebe does appear to be Handling it well, Thanks to her friend, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils.

It might be better that she knows. She’ll be prepared.

No colleges were burned down. Vietnamese villages weren’t so lucky.
