This is a callback to when Mom decided to not get Jamal a supersoaker. I knew things didn’t feel real. Now we know why – Mom’s a head case. Hopefully, she recognizes the better part of valor.
Mom’s a headcase? Really? I’m an ordinary, white, middle class, woman of a certain age and even I realize what has been happening in some places in America. Cops aren’t all bad. They don’t all act like this. But she was not beyond the realms of reality or possibility. She thought things all the way through. “This COULD happen.” Yes, it’s the extreme outcome, and one prays it will never come to that, but she’s not wrong. And if you don’t think racial profiling happens every day in America, you have your head in the sand.
well [four letter word], you pulled it off. It’s not what I was expecting, but it’s so horrifyingly possible to Shay, and I’m sorry it is.My only thought up until this strip was "how are you going to have Jamal and his mother go on from this, how could you do anything to them more … lethal than you have done with this arc.
I tip my hat to you sir, for superior story telling and getting me to care so [deleted] much in such a short time about pixels on the screen.
I am so glad Jermaine is still around; I like him, and Jamal needs someone to help him lighten up :) (at least some time). This would have been a devastating reality to a strip that has been able to balance humor with gravitas. I feel for Mom; having to suck it up to protect her children with rage boiling on the inside. But, not knowing from personal experience, this seems to be the history of the Black experience in America.

My first thought was that this was a dream sequence and she woke up with a chance for a do-over. Probably not.
