Most of western civilization hasn’t used Greek for several thousand years, but we still understand the letters of the Greek alphabet well enuf to use them for jokes, poetry, and proverbs. That’s the way it should be with pints, pounds, inches, miles, ounces (both kinds), yards, furlongs, etc. after we finally join the rest of the world (the rational part) in using the metric system.
We’ll still be able to say “penny wise and pound foolish” (even tho we haven’t used the pound as a unit of money in the US for a quarter of a millennium) and people will know what we mean. Same with “A miss is as good as a mile” or “A pint’s a pound the world around” (reasonable approximation but nowhere nearly as precise as “A litre’s a kilogram everywhere”).
