Hated algebra – couldn’t figure out what it was good for – then – of all the careers I could have chosen I picked computers and programming – oh look algebra (sigh)
Then, teach basic math, enough to add up your bills and figure out how much wallpaper you need, the stuff that you will actually use in a nontechnical life, which most of us have. Then, teach the rest of it to the people who are going in to fields where it will actually be used. I don’t think many people remember the stuff they don’t use any longer than it takes to pass the test on it anyway.
You just never know – 5 of us hung out together in H.S. – all of us have had productive lives. Went into 5 different careers. Raised families. Had a few bumps in life. The one that struggled the most with high school and homework and whose grades were always the lowest is now the richest by far of any of us. He decided since he wasn’t too smart he’d just ‘pound nails’. All of us met up about 5 years ago to visit. He still struggles with ‘book’ stuff, and still hates to read but had recently sold his construction company for over a million and retired. Mostly just does what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants. But best of all he was content and happy having never taken algebra, physics, or even getting a college degree.

“Live and learn” is more than just an expression, Curly.
