The first Christmas we were dating (back in the mid 1970s) and had been doing so for only about a month. We agreed to a $5 limit for gifts.
I happen to see a gift for him that was a necklace charm for $5 – hmmm, needs a chain though, well if I give him one of mine, I haven’t spent anything.
He saw a teddy bear battery radio for $8.
So we figure it worked out even.
Most years since – maybe all of them – much more is spent on his gift than mine. Most years I do not get any gift – for a long time I would get my new work appointment book as my only gift, and I would have bought the same $5 book if I got it as gift or I just bought it as I needed to keep track of appointments and contact info. When I switched to the Palm he had bought himself and decided did not work for him (“here, try this; I am not going to use it again”), I never needed an appointment book again – so no gifts for me.
