Glad to see Gary Brookins and Susie MacNelly calling out “campaign contributions” for the LEGALIZED BRIBES they are. We must get money out of politics and reform our elections so that WE THE PEOPLE choose our elected representatives instead of representatives choosing their voters with gerrymandering funded by corporations and wealthy donors that don’t even live in their districts.
It isn’t difficult to get money out of politics. It is illegal for an individual to give more than $2300 ( I think, might remember wrong, but it’s around that). It is quite simple to pass a law that no organization can donate. That includes unions, parties, lobbying firms, businesses, etc. NO ONE other than an individual, writing his own check, and limited to say $200 per election, which goes directly to the candidate’s committee, not to a collecting group of any sort. That will substantially cut down on the amount of campaigning that gets done. Anyone going to miss those phone calls? Then require that all media give equal time to all candidates, and let the candidate speak for themselves. Snarky, or adoring, reporters not allowed to take up the candidate’s time. A couple of nights a week for maybe three months before the election== with the subject to be discussed, in depth not sound bites, advertised heavily. Follow up with factual analysis— just that the candidate was incorrect about a statement, and explain what the actual facts are. No editorializing permitted, just facts. Let both candidates have some degree of input, off camera, and then simply tell the truth. Put the whole series of statements on line for those who only get interested on the first of November. Then each representative to the electoral college gets to vote the number of actual votes he represents, and the person who wins actually wins.Wouldn’t you think that any candidate who is a decent person would welcome that sort of campaign instead of the mess we have going on now?
MA voters recently approved question 2, that apparently seemed to be for setting up a committee to investigate getting an amendment to overturn Citizens United, I think! It had no ads before the election [unlike the other questions] and had so many paragraphs that the ballot this year was 2 pages double sided.
Neither corporations nor unions (nor cities nor states) are PEOPLE. The problem is, when reductio ad absurdum is built INTO an idiotic (and dishonest) Supreme Court decision, it’s hard to satirize.

Bumper sticker: “I’ll believe corporations are people when Texas executes one” – pretty sad comment all the way ’round.
